installing and commissioning a DCP cinema projector
Here’s a practical step-by-step guide for installing and commissioning a DCP cinema projector such as a Barco, Christie or NEC, assuming a standard cinema setup with a cinema server/media block and Dolby or equivalent audio processor.



DCP Cinema Projector Installation
Survey the projection position. Measure screen width, throw distance, projector height, lens centre and available space. Confirm that the chosen lens covers the required throw ratio and image size. Ideally the projector should be centred horizontally on the screen and as close as practical to the correct vertical position to minimise lens shift and keystone distortion.
Check the projection surface. Confirm the screen’s actual image dimensions and aspect ratio. For cinema you will normally need to accommodate both Flat 1.85:1 and Scope 2.39:1 formats. Check masking arrangements if fitted.
Confirm power requirements. Check the manufacturer’s electrical specification for the exact projector. Large cinema projectors may require dedicated high-current or three-phase supplies, while smaller laser cinema machines may run from a conventional single-phase circuit. The supply should be professionally installed, correctly protected and properly earthed.
Do not open lamp-house, laser, high-voltage or power-supply sections unless you are specifically trained and authorised for that projector.
Provide adequate ventilation. Cinema projectors generate considerable heat. Make sure the projector’s air intake and exhaust paths are unobstructed. Xenon machines may require external extraction ducting. Laser models still require substantial cooling airflow.
Install the projector pedestal or rack. The base must be solid, level and capable of safely carrying the projector. Cinema projectors can be extremely heavy. Level the pedestal first, then position the projector.
Fit the correct lens. Install the manufacturer’s specified lens for your throw distance. Make sure it is securely locked into the lens mount. Do not touch the optical surfaces.
Connect the cinema server. Depending on the system this could be an integrated media block or external server such as Dolby, Doremi, GDC or another DCI-compatible system.
A typical signal chain is:
DCP content → Cinema server / IMB → Projector
The server communicates with the projector and supplies the encrypted cinema picture.
Connect the audio system. The server’s audio output normally feeds a cinema processor.
For example:
Cinema server → Dolby cinema processor → amplifiers → cinema loudspeakers
A typical 5.1 installation uses Left, Centre, Right, Left Surround, Right Surround and Subwoofer channels. 7.1 adds additional surround channels.
Connect the control network. Connect the projector, server and cinema processor to the cinema/control network. Assign appropriate static IP addresses and confirm that all components can communicate.
Power up in the correct sequence. Power the projector and allow it to complete its startup sequence. Then start the server and processor as appropriate. Confirm that there are no cooling, interlock, lamp/laser or communication errors.
Create the basic screen alignment. Display a projector test pattern. Adjust physical projector position first wherever possible. Then use lens shift, zoom and focus to fill the screen correctly.
Avoid electronically correcting a badly positioned projector if the projector itself can be repositioned.
Set Flat format. Load a 1.85:1 test pattern and adjust zoom, shift and masking so the image correctly fills the Flat presentation area. Save this as a lens/macro preset such as FLAT.
Set Scope format. Load a 2.39:1 Scope pattern and adjust the lens preset so the Scope image correctly fills the screen. Save this as SCOPE.
Many modern installations use lens memory rather than an anamorphic lens.
Set focus carefully. Focus using a proper DCP test pattern rather than film content. Check centre, edges and corners. If one part is sharp and another badly out of focus, check projector-to-screen alignment rather than simply adjusting focus.
Check convergence. On three-chip projectors, inspect red, green and blue alignment using a grid or convergence test pattern. Significant convergence errors should be corrected using the manufacturer’s approved procedure.
Set image geometry and cropping. Confirm there is no unwanted overscan. Check that subtitles, framing marks and the complete intended image remain visible.
Calibrate brightness. Cinema calibration normally targets approximately 14 foot-lamberts on screen for 2D presentation, subject to the applicable cinema specification and installation conditions. Measure this with an appropriate calibrated light meter rather than judging it by eye.
Calibrate colour. A proper DCI cinema installation should be calibrated with suitable measurement equipment. Set white point, colour space, gamma and projector colour calibration according to the projector and DCI requirements.
Configure projector macros. Typical macros might include:

SCOPE 2D
FLAT 3D
SCOPE 3D

The macro can control lens position, masking, lamp/laser level, colour settings and input configuration.
Configure the cinema server. Check the auditorium settings, audio channel mapping, projector connection, automation commands and KDM clock/time settings.
Test DCP playback. Ingest a known-good DCP and play it through the complete system. Verify picture, sound and automation rather than relying only on projector test patterns.
Check audio channel assignment. Use a cinema audio channel-identification test. Confirm each channel actually comes from the correct speaker. Pay particular attention to Centre, LFE/sub and surround routing.
Check lip-sync. Play suitable test material and adjust system delay where necessary. Image processing, audio processors and digital amplifiers can introduce different amounts of latency.
Test a real Flat and Scope feature or trailer. Run both formats and ensure the correct projector macro, masking and audio format are automatically selected.
Test failure and restart behaviour. Confirm what happens following a power interruption, server reboot or projector restart. Make sure staff know the correct shutdown and startup procedure.
Save and back up the configuration. Record projector IP addresses, server settings, lens macros, screen measurements, audio routing and calibration values. Export configuration backups where the equipment allows it.
For a typical mobile DCP cinema, the complete installation would look roughly like this:
DCP server / IMB → DCI projector → cinema screen
and
Server audio → Dolby/cinema processor → amplifiers → L/C/R + surrounds + subwoofer.
