How to Start a Cinema
Explore the potential of your venue before investing in a permanent installation.
Starting a cinema begins with understanding your space, your audience and the right equipment. ProScreens provides temporary cinema hire so you can host screenings, assess demand and explore the practical requirements before committing to a permanent installation.
With over 30 years of cinema and projection experience, we can guide you from an initial trial screening through to a professionally installed cinema system.
Try a Cinema Before You Invest
Whether you manage a village hall, community centre, arts venue or commercial space, a temporary cinema provides an opportunity to test your plans in practice. ProScreens can supply and set up projection, screen, playback and sound equipment suited to your venue.
Use your trial screenings to assess attendance, gather audience feedback and understand the work and costs involved. You can then make a more informed decision about regular screenings or a permanent installation.
Modern Technology Makes Cinema More Accessible
Traditional film projection involved large projectors, reels, film handling equipment and a dedicated projection room. Modern digital cinema offers a more compact approach, with films supplied as a Digital Cinema Package, or DCP, and played through a compatible cinema server and projector.
In suitable venues, a cinema projector can be ceiling mounted or installed within a purpose-designed enclosure. The installation must account for projection distance, structural support, cooling, equipment access and fan noise.
Laser cinema projectors remove the need for routine projection lamp replacement. They still require appropriate servicing and maintenance, but can simplify the day-to-day operation of a cinema.
Community Value and Commercial Opportunity
A cinema can become a valuable asset to your venue: bringing people together, attracting new visitors and creating opportunities for sustainable income.
For community organisations, screenings can support fundraising and give residents access to cinema closer to home. For commercial venues, a film programme can encourage repeat visits and create opportunities for ticket, food and refreshment sales.
A trial helps you explore these opportunities against the actual costs of equipment, film bookings, staffing and running your venue.
Plan Your Film Programme
Your choice of films will help determine the equipment and arrangements you need. Community screenings, classic films and new-release cinema programmes can have different technical and booking requirements.
Installing DCP equipment does not automatically provide access to the latest releases. Film availability, screening rights and release dates must be agreed with the relevant distributor or licensing provider.
From Temporary Hire to Permanent Installation
If your trial demonstrates demand, ProScreens can help you develop a permanent system around your venue, programme and budget. We consider screen size, projection position, playback, sound, ambient light and everyday operation.
Our aim is to provide a practical cinema solution that suits your audience and supports your long-term plans.
